Christmas Eve arrives and the house is filled with food and guests. They retire to the barn which is lit by candles. They sing and dance and there is a short sermon.
Mr. Brownrigg the churchwarden is there. He does not fall asleep during the sermon because he is standing up. He shakes the vicar's hand warmly.
Mr. Walton asks Jane Rogers to sing a Christmas song. She has a beautiful voice, and Mr. Brownrigg listens with a tear in his eye. He changes his mind about Jane and agrees to let her marry his son.
