Mr. Stoddart is in a bad mood and gets angry with Judy for dropping some of his books, so they all leave him alone and go to another part of the house to visit.
Their visit is interrupted by the return of Mrs. Oldcastle from London, where she has been trying to convince Mr. Everard to marry Ethelwyn.
Mr. Walton says hello to Mrs. Oldcastle on his way out, and walks home.
He does not see Ethelwyn for some time, but hears her playing the organ in church on Sundays.
