Mr. Walton is troubled about Ethelwyn Oldcastle. Mrs. Oldcastle keeps coming between them and he doesn't know what to do about it. So he goes for a walk in a storm. While he is out in the storm he meets Catherine Weir, the carpenter's estranged daughter.
Catherine's health is getting worse and her mind is troubled. She tells Mr. Walton that she wants to get revenge on the father of her child because he never married her. (She is wandering around in the storm because her mind is beginning to slip. ) Mr. Walton tells her to forgive the father of her child, and persuades her to go home and rest.
