Mr. Walton, the vicar

Mr. Walton, the vicar, is walking through an alley of trees when he sees Ethelwyn. He goes to talk to her, but she seems distant to him. This hurts his feelings.

He arrives at the shop of Thomas Weir the carpenter and goes to see how he is doing. The carpenter seems gloomy, and is not glad to see Mr. Walton. Mr. Walton asks if the carpenter's son could come study with him in the mornings. He chastises the carpenter for not yet forgiving his daughter, then realizes he is speaking harshly because of his own hurt feelings over Ethelwyn, so he asks the carpenter's forgiveness.

It is now evening, and Mr. Walton has not yet had time to prepare his sermon for Sunday morning. He goes into the church to think about his sermon. While he is sitting there the organ begins to play. He is sure it is Ethelwyn playing the organ. He sits listening. He decides to preach about the love of God.
