The vicar is feeling depressed about his life and ministry in the town of Marshmallows. Not only is his relationship with Ethelwyn not going anywhere, he feels he has offended the carpenter and lost his chance to bring him back to a happy relationship with God.
The only person he feels connected to is Old Rogers, but he can take no credit for it, because the old man was already godly before he met the vicar. Just then up walks Old Rogers, wanting to talk to him.
Old Rogers encourages the vicar to keep hoping in God, and tells him a story from his days as a sailor, when he was in a literal fog for weeks, and almost lost hope himself. In the end the fog lifted and the sailors were saved. Old Rogers encourages the vicar to wait patiently for the Lord and not lose hope.
