The happy story that Mrs. Bloomfield tells to Adela:
Mr. and Mrs. Bloomfield used to have two children.  (the Colonel is surprised to hear this, he had assumed they had no children, but nevermind)  One of the children did not live long, and the other was now grown up and working in India.  But when the children had been very young, Mr. and Mrs. Bloomfield had been in poor health.  They had not been able to go to work for a time, and that time had been bleak to Mrs. Bloomfield.

During that time, a friend had taken Mrs. Bloomfield to see a new park in town, but Mrs. Bloomfield did not really care about the park.  Healthy, well-to-do families came walking through the park, but Mrs. Bloomfield found she did not care about them.  Then thin and sickly people who worked too hard came walking by, and Mrs. Bloomfield began to be a little bit grateful there was a park for them to come to.  By and by an old, frail man and his grand-daughter came slowly by.  The old man said, "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures," and Mrs. Bloomfield sighed.  Finally a ragged boy with blond curls who was mentally handicapped came by, examining his bright pocket handkerchief.  Mrs. Bloomfield overheard the boy explaining to a grouchy old road-worker that his heavenly father was going to give him a kite soon.  She gave the boy her last coin, to buy the kite.
