Percy's mother demands to know how much of the clergyman's story is true.  This offends John, but Ralph Armstrong, the clergyman, gives her an answer.  Parts of the story really did happen, though I don't remember which, but the clergyman did remember, and was able to give a faithful reckoning of the people and events in the story to Mrs. Cathcart, the mother of Percy.

Before leaving, Harry the doctor asks Adela how she has slept the last few nights, and takes her pulse.  She answers that she has slept better than usual lately, and he replies that in that case he sees no need to prescribe any medicine, and says goodnight.

All this takes place under the three-fold scrutiny of Mrs. Cathcart, her son Percy, and their relative the Colonel, Adela's father.  John perceives that Adela detects the surveillance.
