The schoolmaster's wife grieves for her baby.  She finds comfort in deciding to go back to being  a child to her Father in heaven.

And the schoolmaster?  At first he feels God is punishing him for his thoughts of worry over the future.  But over time better thoughts come in.  There is an old woman who comes in to visit the schoolmaster and his wife.  She has heard the news about the death of their baby.  She tells them about an old, abandoned, sinful man who passed away the same night with their baby.

The old woman was taking care of the old, dying man.  He was no relation of hers.  He was dying because of his reckless life.  He was alone because he had alienated all of his children, and they did not see pity on him.  When he knew he was about to die, he begged the old woman to kiss him, and she did.  Then he turned away and didn't speak anymore, and then he died.

The schoolmaster, hearing this story, feels pity for the old man.  He wants to become like a little child again to his Father in heaven, like the old man became like a little child to the old woman before he died.
