Dr. Duncan has come to visit Mr. Walton. They are talking about Catherine Weir, the unfriendly woman from the shop. She is getting sicker, yet does not believe the doctor about it.

Mr. Walton goes to the shop to see Catherine. He asks her why she never speaks to her father, Thomas Weir. She becomes angry and leaves the room.

Mr. Walton goes to the carpenter shop to see Thomas. Thomas is there working with his son. Mr. Walton invites the son to study with him in the mornings before breakfast. This delights both father and son.
