Young Weir

It is summertime in Marshmallows. Mr. Walton spends his Saturday morning out in the fields with his Greek New Testament. He spends the afternoon practicing his sermon in the old church.

Leaving the church at dusk, he hears a moan and vaguely sees the form of someone over one of the gravestones. It is a young man, the son of Thomas Weir. He is there at his mother's grave because his father has thrown him out of the house.

Mr. Walton brings him to the vicarage and listens to the whole story. The young man has lost his job in the city because he was too honest. He got in trouble for not trying to decieve Mrs. Oldcastle and her daughter when they came to his store. Now his father will not believe his story, and thinks he lost his job because of bad behavior.

Mr. Walton goes to Oldcastle Hall and asks Ethelwyn Oldcastle to come tell Thomas Weir what happened at the shop. Mrs. Oldcastle is furious with Mr. Walton for asking such a thing, but Ethelwyn sneaks away and goes with him.

Thomas listens to Ethelwyn and finally believes that his son is innocent. Mr. Walton and Ethelwyn walk back to Oldcastle Hall, where Ethelwyn will face the wrath of her mother.
