Mr. Walton begins to teach Tom Weir, the son of the carpenter Thomas Weir. He comes early each morning and studies with Mr. Walton before breakfast. He does so well that in three months he is able to read in Latin.

Mr. Walton feels that Tom is intelligent and could succeed in any profession. He teaches Tom all that summer and winter.
