He also sees Mrs. Oldcastle looking fiercely at him from her pew. After the service, Judy asks him how he dared to preach at Grannie. She tells him that her Grannie is unlikely to ever forgive him for preaching about forgiveness.
Judy tells Mr. Walton that Mrs. Oldcastle has been treating Ethelwyn unkindly.
In the afternoon, Mr. Walton looks out his window and sees a fashionable young man approaching Oldcastle Hall. He is riding a horse and looks handsome. This does not bode well for Mr. Walton, who is by now in love with Ethelwyn Oldcastle.
Instead of brooding over the handsome young man visiting the Oldcastles, Mr. Walton goes out to the fields to study his New Testament. He forgets all about his troubles.
