A Shadow recounts how he and his Shadow friends helped an old gentleman to get out of a gloomy mood he was in last Christmas day. They happily relate that he has not been gloomy since, and has allowed his niece to marry as well.

Another Shadow tells of going to a castle expecting to find happy people and finding a funeral for the prince instead, and a great Shadow shrouding him. The queen and king and the people were all weeping, and the Shadows wished then that they were not Shadows, but wished they were angels who could comfort people. They felt so badly that they left the castle and wandered into the sky, and were met by some angels coming down, on their way to the people at the castle. Then the Shadows were much relieved.
