John and the Colonel are fox hunting. They are stopped in their hunt when the fox dives under a fence and into a steep canyon on the other side. Harry, the doctor, is riding by on his horse. He is on his way to visit his patients.

Suddenly, a man runs over and asks Harry to go quickly to the quarry, where there has been an explosion. The quarry is on the other side of the canyon, so Harry and the horse jump over the fence and ride straight down the steep canyon, and up the other side. It turns out there are not many injured at the quarry after all, but Harry's bravery makes a good impression on the Colonel.

Mr. Bloomfield, the schoolmaster, has a story, or rather a parable, to read for Adela and the rest of the group. He and Mrs. Bloomfield stop by that week to invite their friends to meet at their house the following week to hear the story.

It will be the last meeting of the Story-telling group, because the Christmas holidays are over. John will soon be returning to London.
