The Last Chapter

Harry tries to see the Colonel, to apologize for almost kissing his daughter, and to ask permission to court her. The Colonel refuses to see him, however. With the help of a sympathetic butler, Harry manages to have a word with Adela. They are caught talking together in the garden when the Colonel looks out and sees them.

Unfortunately the Colonel is unwilling to let Harry court Adela. Weeks pass and he is still unmoved. In the end he receives some bad news and has a heart attack. (The bad news was that the Colonel has lost a large amount of money) Harry is called for, and faithfully cares for the Colonel until he is recovered.

The Colonel has a change of heart during this time, and allows Harry to come and see Adela again. The Colonel's recovery looks hopeful. John goes back to London with a happy heart.
