The vicar recognizes the carpenter's face from church on Sunday. He is the same man who sat in the organ balcony and watched the vicar throughout the services.
They begin to talk about the coffin, the world and the carpenter's family. The coffin is for the carpenter's sister, who was married to a drunk. The carpenter's opinion of the world and of God is very low, and he is bitter about his family. The vicar speaks to him about these subjects.
The vicar notices that the workshop is really an old dining room, and this leads to the revelation that the carpenter is descended from some distinguished ancestors. He tells the vicar that his father is still living, and would enjoy a visit.
The vicar promises to pay a visit to the carpenter's father another day. He is expecting company soon at the parsonage. He says good-bye and continues on his way home.
Walking away, he thinks to himself that the carpenter's face looks familiar.
