The Carpenter's Father

Mr. Walton the vicar has just come from visiting Oldcastle Hall. He goes to see the carpenter, Thomas Weir, and asks to visit his father upstairs.

The carpenter takes him upstairs and shows him into a room with a fireplace. Seated by the fire is a bent old man who rises to greet the vicar.

The old man's name is Samuel. He tells Mr. Walton a story about his birth long ago in Oldcastle Hall, and of how he came to be abandoned beside the lake at the bottom of the cliff.

It turns out that he is the grandfather of the unfriendly woman at the shop, whose name is Catherine. He is the great-grandfather of the little boy who wants to be a painter.
