First Sunday in Marshmallows

It is the vicar's first Sunday in Marshmallows. He reads the morning service and is pleased to see the people are paying close attention. But in the afternoon the people are less attentive because they have had lunch and are feeling drowsy. The vicar sympathetically shortens his sermon, finding it hard to blame hardworking people for feeling tired on the day of rest.

During the services, he notices the organ is a little rusty but still has some true notes. He also notices a man sitting up in the organ loft, who watches him throughout the services.

Church gets out as the sun is going down, and the vicar goes out the front door with the people. He sees the little boy again, the one he overheard wishing to be a painter. He goes over and picks the boy up, and they become friends.

Old Rogers also comes and introduces his wife to the vicar. They invite him to visit them at their house near the mill.
