The rain stops as he walks over to a little bridge. He stands on the bridge contemplating the scenery and feeling depressed. This is partly because of the weather, and partly because he has been refused by the woman he loves.
A tall old man comes walking up to the vicar. He stops and says hello, introducing himself as Old Rogers. He tells the vicar he is glad to meet him out of the pulpit, because vicars seem to be different when they are in the pulpit.
Old Rogers moves on, and the vicar thinks the countryside is beginning to look less dreary. He continues his walk and passes a little boy walking with his mother. The sun is setting now, and the little boy is telling his mother that he wishes he was a painter so he could help God paint the sky.
