Passing through the town he spies an iron gate with a fearsome creature engraved at the top. He quickly passes by until he sees the little boy who wants to be a painter. The boy brings him into his mother's store, where the vicar meets the boy's mother.
The boy's mother would be beautiful if she was not so sick. She is unfriendly to the vicar, but not rude. The vicar sees some tobacco on the shelf and buys some before leaving.
He continues on till he reaches the river. Following the river, he sees cows grazing in a sunny pasture, some woods, and trout swimming in the slow brown water.
He comes to an old mill and there he sees two young people talking, one is the miller and the other is the daughter of Old Rogers. The young woman leaves as he approaches.
He talks for a moment with the miller, then continues to the house, where Old Rogers and his wife live. He visits with them and gives the tobacco to Old Rogers, who is very thankful.
During this visit he finds out that Old Roger's daughter works as a lady's maid for one of the ladies in an important house nearby. In addition, Old Rogers recommends a gardener for the vicar.
